In February Missouri jury has awarded $72 million to the family of an Alabama woman Jacqueline Fox who died from ovarian cancer. The plaintiff alleges that Johnson & Johnson talcum powder products caused her ovarian cancer. After the month-long trial the jury in St. Louis circuit court awarded Fox’s family $10 million in actual damages and $62 million in punitive damages. As per the lawyer she had used Johnson’s Baby Powder and Shower to Shower for feminine hygiene for more than 35 years. The jury found Johnson & Johnson responsible of negligence, conspiracy and fraud. After the judgment Johnson & Johnson responded with a short clarification that we have no higher responsibility than the health and safety of consumers and we are disappointed with the outcome of the trial.  We sympathize with the plaintiff’s family but firmly believe the safety of cosmetic talc is supported by decades of scientific evidence.

The second major jury verdict against Johnson & Johnson was pronounced in May. A jury in St. Louis has awarded $55 million to a 62-year-old South Dakota woman, Gloria Ristesund who sued Johnson & Johnson. The verdict included $5 million in actual damages and $50 million in punitive damages. She accuses the company for manufacturing a talcum powder which link with ovarian cancer. The jury found Johnson & Johnson liable for ovarian cancer linked to genital use of its talcum powder products. As per Bloomberg Gloria cancer is currently in remission after a hysterectomy. As per lawsuit attorney Johnson & Johnson knew that its talcum powder products posed a risk to women’s health, but they did nothing to warn the public.

In more than 1,000 lawsuits Johnson & Johnson is accused in state and federal courts of ignoring studies linking its Shower-to-Shower product and Johnson’s Baby Powder to ovarian cancer. According to the plaintiffs Johnson & Johnson knew that its talcum powder products associated with life threatening risk and link with ovarian cancer. They conspired and conceal the harmful effect cause by Shower-to-Shower product and Johnson’s Baby Powder. The Studies related to Talcum Powder have suggested that talc powder may contribute to the development of ovarian cancer since 1971. However, J&J has not published any warning for consumers.

After these two major verdicts more than 3,000 victims have come forward to tell of battling ovarian cancer or the loss of a loved one from the disease after the use of Johnson’s products. More than 1,200 talcum powder ovarian cancer lawsuits that are now pending in courts against Johnson & Johnson, cases could be consolidated to a special multidistrict litigation court for quicker handling, which is similar to a baby powder class action lawsuit. In addition to the Missouri cases, nearly 200 claims have been centralized in a multicounty litigation. The lawsuits have similar allegations. The plaintiffs proclaim that the regular, repeated application of these products to the genitals can allow talc particles to enter the vagina, and make their way to the ovaries and lead to cancer.
