According to the Albuquerque Journal report, from New Mexico a group of 15 women have joined a growing number of lawsuits against baby powder manufacturer Johnson & Johnson and filed Talcum powder lawsuit claiming that the talcum powder products produced by Johnson & Johnson leads to ovarian cancer. The family members of two women who died from ovarian cancer were also involved in the lawsuit. According to the lawsuits the manufacturers failed to warn users of the increased risk of ovarian cancer caused by using talc-based products for personal hygiene use. The lawsuit is not the only one in the United States that accuses the manufacturer; there are thousands of lawsuits against Johnson and Johnson which are pending in the court.

How Talcum Powder Causes Ovarian Cancer?

From decades the talcum powder use for intimate feminine hygiene and the higher risk of ovarian cancer is connected. Researchers believed that the product may migrate through the vagina and into the fallopian tubes, uterus and ovaries, where women may face an increased risk of ovarian cancer from talcum powder. From many years women dust talcum powder on undergarments and sanitary pads to keep the genital area cool and comfortable and discourage the development of vaginal odor. Talc effectively absorbs moisture and reduces friction. In 1999, gynecologists at Brigham and Women’s Hospital ended their study, which found a 60% increase in the rate of ovarian cancer among women who used talc in their genital areas.

Ovarian cancer is the eighth most common cancer and the fifth leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. Several studies in women have looked at the possible link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer. Talcum powder is an astringent powder used for preventing diaper rash, as a deodorant, and for other cosmetic uses. It may be composed of talc. The manufacturers were aware of almost 40 years of independent scientific studies which linked the use of their products to higher risk of ovarian cancer when the talc was applied in the genital area However, the company has never put a warning notice or label on its talcum powder products and decided to withhold the information as per them the risk was not significant enough to require a product warning.

As per a new study which reveals that side effects of talcum powder cosmetic products may include a potential risk of mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a rare cancer of the lining of the chest or abdominal cavity associated with the exposure of Asbestos. Some Talc may be contaminated with asbestos. It is the most common form of cancer lead with asbestos exposure generally attacks the lungs and abdomen. Thousands of women and their families have already filed suits naming Johnson & Johnson as the defendant concerning the adverse effects of these powders. Doctor’s advice public to minimize the use of talc as little as possible. J & J has denied the allegations that their products cause cancer and has clarified that there is no causal link exists between talcum powder and ovarian cancer. Despite feeling guilty the company is claiming the scientific evidence support its safety.

A Baby Powder class action lawsuit was filed in California in April, seeking to force Johnson & Johnson to properly inform consumers about the potential health risks, including a significantly increased risk of ovarian cancer. Many have already been awarded millions of dollars in compensation and lawsuit numbers are continuing to grow. The manufacturers knew of the health risks associated with powders containing talc and failed to warn consumers of the danger.
