Recently a man from Quebec went through a delicate surgery procedure to remove the broken IVC Filter from his body. As per the report man name is John Boehmer, was implanted with a temporary IVC filter. The IVC filter is placed in the inferior vena cava, the largest vein in the body, and an IVC filter is a metallic cage like device that traps a blood clot before it can reach the lungs. It is used in those patients who may develop a PE and cannot be treated by using anticoagulant medication. After few months of the implantation he discovered severe pain, eight months later when surgeons tried to remove it they discovered serious complications. John was told that it is very risky to remove the device as the device was embedded in his vena cava and one of its needle-like legs had nearly punctured his pancreas. Due to these severe complications the device could not be removed.
Few months later after doctors told John that the device could not be removed and he may have to live with the spider-like device in his body for the rest of his life, In August a news channel interviewed John and fortunately Dr. Adnan Hadziomerovic, an Interventional Radiologist from The Ottawa Hospital, was watching CTV News and very soon after the interview Dr got in contact with Boehmer to discuss about removing his IVC filter. Although Dr Hadziomerovic is expert in his field as he has removed 200 IVC filters over the years, John surgery is a complex one as one of leg of the filter had nearly punctured his pancreas so the surgery procedure to remove a broken IVC filter is very risky. Finally after 45 minutes of delicate surgery the device was removed from John’s body successfully.
The FDA has received more than 1,000 reports of serious IVC filter side effects reports involving IVC filters. Types of reports include device migration, filter fracture, embolization (movement of the entire filter or fracture fragments to the heart or lungs), perforation of the IVC, and difficulty removing the device. The agency issued a safety communication which states that the risk of device perforation greatly increased the longer the device stayed in the body and recommending they be removed after 39 days, but before 54 days. Recently Health Canada proposed a safety warning on IVC filters serious complications. The agency also initiated class action lawsuit against the manufacturers. According to the agency, as of June 6, 2016 it had received 121 reports of severe complications linked to IVC filters, including serious injuries and deaths.
More than 2,000 IVC filter lawsuits have been filed by people across the nations who were injured by IVC filters.
