Although talcum powder has been used from many decades for intimate feminine hygiene but as per studies, clinical trials and many research result it is associated with the higher risk of ovarian cancer. From many years women dust talcum powder on undergarments and sanitary pads to keep the genital area cool and comfortable and discourage the development of vaginal odor. In the United States Talcum powder is kept in most of the bathrooms and nurseries. Increasing number of research, several investigations on talc and medical evidence suggests that women should not use talcum powder as an intimate hygiene powder because it’s connected to ovarian cancer. In 1999, gynecologists at Brigham and Women’s Hospital ended their study, which found a 60% increase in the rate of ovarian cancer among women who used talc in their genital areas. The manufacturers were aware of almost 40 years of independent scientific studies which linked the use of their products to higher risk of ovarian cancer However, the company has never put a warning notice or label on its talcum powder products and decided to withhold the information as per them the risk was not significant enough to require a product warning.

Recently four more product liability lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson. The lawsuits have been filed by women or their families in Washington and Oregon. The lawsuits allege that there is a connection between Talcum powder and ovarian cancer. As per the women they were diagnosed with ovarian cancer after using talcum powder for decades. One of the four women was died on February 23, 2015 due to ovarian cancer caused by talcum powder and three of them have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer proclaim that the regular, repeated application of these products to the genitals can allow talc particles to enter the vagina, and make their way to the ovaries and lead to cancer. Women throughout the United States may have developed ovarian cancer from side effects of talcum powder. The lawsuits allege that the manufacturers failed to warn users of the increased risk of ovarian cancer caused by using talc-based products for personal hygiene use.

In 1971, scientists found that there is a possible connection between the dusting of female genitals with talcum powder and ovarian cancer. Johnson & Johnson (Janssen Pharmaceuticals) was aware of research that presents the evidence of the risk associated of its product. However the company conspired and conceals the harmful effect cause by their products. In order to protect profits derived from company’s Baby Powder and Shower-to-Shower product lines Johnson & Johnson failed to provide any warnings to consumers. Despite feeling guilty the company has denied the allegations that their products cause cancer and has clarified that there is no causal link exists between talcum powder and ovarian cancer. Johnson & Johnson has repeatedly defended its product stating that all the findings and results come out from the research and studies support the safety of talc in cosmetic products.
