Pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson “Janssen Pharmaceuticals” manufacturer of two powders, Johnson baby talc and shower to shower- a product also made by Johnson & Johnson supposedly, specifically for use in genital area is in trouble because of the increasing number of product liability lawsuits filed against them. The courts of New Jersey where J&J is headquartered are dealing with at least 80 Johnson and Johnson lawsuits  from those claiming that talcum powders are link with ovarian cancer. Women throughout the United States may have developed ovarian cancer from side effects of talcum powder. The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer [IARC] has suggested women should not use talcum powder as an intimate hygiene powder because of its link to ovarian cancer and it is possibly carcinogenic to humans. However the manufacturers failed to warn users of the increased risk of ovarian cancer caused by using talc-based products for personal hygiene use.

Numerous studies have confirmed that Talcum powders are possibly carcinogenic to human’s body. A carcinogen is any substance that has the potential to cause cancer in living tissues. Talcum powder is an astringent powder used for preventing diaper rash, as a deodorant, and for other cosmetic uses. It may be composed of talc. Talcum powder contains cancer-causing asbestos also known as tremolite. In June 2013, a study published in the medical journal Cancer Prevention Research found that the use of Talcum powder in the genital area causes a 20% to 30% percent increased risk of ovarian cancer compared to those who do not apply talc. The product may migrate through the vagina and into the fallopian tubes, uterus and ovaries, where women may face an increased risk of ovarian cancer from talcum powder.

J&J Hid Clinical Trial Data

From many years women dust talcum powder on undergarments and sanitary pads to keep the genital area cool and comfortable and discourage the development of vaginal odor. The defendants were aware of almost 40 years of independent scientific studies which linked the use of their products to higher risk of ovarian cancer when the talc was applied in the genital area but the manufacturers decided to withheld the information as per them the risk was not significant enough to require a product warning. J&J knew the risks of its powder products since the early 1980s but hid the clinical trial data which would reveal the dangerous adverse effects associated with the product. Despite to reveal the risk of the products, Johnson & Johnson took no action to warn consumers of the dangers of using them as an odor stopper or to help with sweat or moisture. The company risks all its reputation as well as put the whole J&J brand in forum to protect this one business.

In United States about 20,000 women annually are diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and more than 14,000 die. At present, thousands of women have filed lawsuits across the country against Johnson & Johnson alleging that the use of talcum powder leads to ovarian cancer.
