Lipitor is related to a collection of drugs called HMG CoA reeducates inhibitors, or “statins.” Statins work by limiting the ability of the liver to create an enzyme that prompts the body to produce cholesterol. It is manufactured by pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, which is the most popular of all statins and was approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in September 2005. Lipitor is used to treat high cholesterol, and to lower the risk of caress, heart attack, or other heart complications in people with two types of diabetes, coronary heart disease, or other risk factors. According to the seven years of study women who took Lipitor is in the risk group is higher chance of developing the disease than those who were not. Due to the dangerous outcomes of the drug the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) added a warning on diabetes risk to the label of Lipitor.

According to the study done by researcher Yunsheng Ma, MD, PhD, MPH, of the University of Massachusetts Medical School Lipitor use in Post-Menopausal women may be associated with an increased risk of diabetes II. The stage in which a woman stops having her monthly period is called Menopause and Post-Menopausal is the years after menopause in this stage the ovaries gradually stop producing estrogen as a result of a lower level of estrogen; postmenopausal women are at increased risk for a number of health conditions like osteoporosis and heart disease. The study suggested that cholesterol-lowering Lipitor is associated with an almost 50 percent higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, which is a life threatening adverse effect of the drug.  It was found that peri- and post-menopausal women were at a higher risk of developing type II diabetes.

Thousands of lawsuits have been filed against drug manufacturers with many more Lipitor lawsuits expected to be filed soon alleging that Lipitor was associated with severe life threatening adverse effects. Although the manufacturer knew about the risk of health problems from Lipitor, inadequate warnings were provided for users and the medical community. The Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) has issued warnings linking the use of statins to risk of serious muscle damage (“rhabdomyolysis”), and risk of kidney or liver damage. Though Lipitor holds the coveted status of the world’s top-selling prescription drug of all time it has been associated with multiple serious side effects.
